In regards to the comment about healthcare, I think it's time that the government support grassroots efforts that aim to provide free healthcare and benefits to those who lack the resources. The MCC Medical clinic in Maryland has been in recent establishment and has impacted the lives of thousands of people by providing healthcare and medicine FREE of cost for those who cannot afford health insurance. Both of my grandparents who are visiting from outside the country have been treated for severe health conditions at this clinic without paying a single penny. The question is, how do we create more models like the MCC clinic around the country, and perhaps the world? Here is their website: http://www.mccmedicalclinic.org/ I personally would like to see more participation from the medical community and I hope we can attract doctors, health policy makers, and medical anthropologists to shape the content of the document. What I fail to understand in all the discussions about health plans, especially those addressing the goal of universal coverage is why there is a need for insurance companies if the goal is to have everyone covered. My understanding is that insurance companies determine and underwrite risk by selecting specific groups but if everyone is covered what role would they play. Can't the public put the insurance companies on the defensive to explain why they are needed.
Also, why doesn't the government offer to pay for the education of doctors and then have them work in facilities for a salary. This would eliminate the excuse that doctors need these salaries to pay back their loans and might provide a better distribution of specialties where needed.
